(Estratto da conferenza tenuta nell’Università del Punjab, India, in occasione del 2nd Jyotish Conference dell’International Federation of Astrology and Spiritual Sciences)

Come accennò negli anni '70 il famoso astrologo indiano B.V. Raman recentemente scomparso, riferendosi ai suoi viaggi in Europa e negli Stati Uniti d'America, il carattere dell'astrologia occidentale è di fatto "psicologico": se in India, egli scrisse, questo sviluppo non è avvenuto, non è dovuto ad "alcuna mancanza da parte degli antichi saggi che diffusero l'astrologia". Il Dr. Raman aveva capito che "l'atteggiamento verso la vita ed il senso dei valori" degli indiani sono diversi da quelli degli occidentali. Infatti in India "la credenza nella teoria del karma è ancora così radicata" che le malattie nervose e psichiche non sono così diffuse come in Occidente, dove vi sono "particolari condizioni industriali e sociali" ("Problems facing Western Astrologers", in "Hindu Astrology and the West", UBSPD 1996).

Ciò che diceva il Dr. Raman negli anni '70 è ancora molto attuale. Pertanto, per comprendere l'astrologia occidentale ed i suoi sviluppi, anche negli anni più recenti, dobbiamo sempre tenere presente le necessità diverse che gli astrologi occidentali si trovano ad affrontare, che sono per la maggior parte di natura psicologica.

È in questo contesto che nella vita di un individuo il ruolo educativo dell'astrologia è di estrema importanza. Gli insegnamenti dell'astrologia sono di natura sia materiale che spirituale, e riguardano non solo la conoscenza limitata alla vita del singolo individuo, ma la conoscenza più ampia e onnicomprensiva della Somma Verità, dell'Anima Cosmica - l'Atman hindu-.

 
Ma che cosa si vuole intendere esattamente quando si parla di "ruolo educativo" dell'astrologia? Semplicemente, che l'astrologia ha qualcosa da "insegnarci". Non è solo una scienza dalla quale si possono individuare i punti forti o deboli nel carattere di una persona, o gli eventi buoni o cattivi che accadono nel corso della sua vita. Questa scienza ci rende capaci di imparare lezioni che riguardano il nostro Io interiore, ed anche il Sé Cosmico, lo Spirito Creatore dell'Universo, di cui tutti noi facciamo parte. Infatti, è inconcepibile che un astrologo non si senta uno con l'intero Universo mentre svolge le sue funzioni: l'oroscopo diventa allora un mezzo per entrare in contatto con un'altra dimensione, che noi chiamiamo "spirituale", per distinguerla dal mondo materiale in cui viviamo.

L'astrologia ha un ruolo educativo in quanto ci insegna che esistono due dimensioni nella vita: una materiale ed una spirituale. Ma, ci potremmo chiedere, perché ci dovrebbe essere una disciplina che ci ricordi l'esistenza di questi due aspetti della vita, se essi si trovano dentro di noi ed intorno a noi spontaneamente? La risposta è che, specie in Occidente, viene dato sempre più spazio al lato materiale della vita, a detrimento di quello spirituale. Questo disequilibrio sicuramente porta all'instabilità psicologica, se non si ricerca una soluzione al problema. Comunque, l'esigenza di colmare questa lacuna ci fa assistere oggigiorno ad una sete di valori spirituali sempre più crescente, la quale però necessita di metodi "educativi" che possano fare ri-scoprire la spiritualità insita in ognuno di noi, assicurando allo stesso tempo che venga posta la giusta attenzione al lato materiale della vita, facendo sì che il nostro Io interiore entri in contatto con l'Io Superiore.

La consapevolezza del materiale e dello spirituale come due aspetti della vita in relazione fra di loro; del Sé individuale e del Sé Cosmico: una persona equilibrata è colei che comprende queste dimensioni nel profondo. In questo senso, "il ruolo educativo dell'astrologia" indica la capacità di inculcare nella gente non solo la Conoscenza, ma anche la vera Saggezza.

 
In Occidente, dove le persone vengono riconosciute più per le loro conquiste di ordine materiale che per quelle di tipo spirituale, l'Astrologia nel suo ruolo educativo potrebbe essere un mezzo importante per evitare di contrarre quelle malattie che hanno carattere psicologico.

Inoltre, in tutte le culture - in quella Occidentale come in quella Orientale - la conoscenza dell'Astrologia può educare la gente a conoscere se stessa ed il mondo che gira loro attorno, rendendo la vita più accettabile da tutti i punti di vista.

Il ruolo educativo è di importanza primaria nell'interpretazione dell'oroscopo. Il suo scopo essenziale è di liberare la nostra mente dalla confusione e dalle paure solo attraverso la conoscenza di noi stessi, delle nostre qualità come dei nostri difetti, credendo fermamente in ciò che Jiddu Krishnamurti insegnava: "Se io penetro però in quell'entità chiamata 'me stesso', allora c'è la possibilità di andare infinitamente più lontano. E' questo che importa veramente; se questo manca la vita ha davvero poco significato, perché non rimane altro che un ciclo di piacere e dolore, di punizioni e di ricompense....". ("La conoscenza", in "Domande e Risposte", 1983).

L'importanza di Urano, Nettuno e Plutone in Astrologia

In generale, la posizione dei pianeti lenti nel nostro tema natale indica in quale modo utilizzeremo quelle particolari energie, mentre i loro transiti hanno una grande importanza nella formazione del carattere, offrendoci la possibilità di cambiare totalmente direzione alla nostra vita ed anche al nostro modo di sentire, ai sentimenti. Questi cambiamenti risulteranno positivi se li capiremo e fluiremo con essi; ma potrebbero anche risultare totalmente incomprensibili e persino distruttivi per coloro che non sono consapevoli delle forze in atto.

Comunque, nel prenderli in considerazione uno ad uno, si cercherà di far comprendere il denso significato che avvolge le loro potenti energie, specie se questi pianeti transitano sui nostri pianeti di nascita. Infatti, vorrei ricordare che proprio per la loro caratteristica di pianeti lenti, i loro transiti potranno verificarsi una sola volta nel corso di una intera vita, e perciò non tutti faremo esperienza degli stessi transiti - per esempio, solo alcuni di noi proveranno il transito di Plutone congiunto al Sole natale, poiché il passaggio di Plutone in uno stesso segno impiega circa 14 anni!

Urano

Urano nel tema natale - così come nelle Rivoluzioni Solari - assume sempre il significato di imprevedibilità, cambiamento. È il pianeta delle persone di genio, così come di coloro che hanno una natura eccentrica. Infatti, è stato messo in relazione con il Segno dell'Acquario, l'Undicesima Casa oroscopica e perciò il pianeta Saturno, che governa pure quel Segno. Saturno, che governa pure il Segno del Capricorno, è però in quest'ultimo Segno più "materialista" che in Acquario, nel quale Segno esso prende più in considerazione l'anima dell'individuo. La "severità" caratteristica del pianeta Saturno, in Urano si colora di imprevedibilità, mantenendo però il suo "centro" intatto: la natura dei suoi cambiamenti è radicale. Inoltre, questi cambiamenti riguardano il nostro Io interiore, e non altre necessità di ordine materiale. Pertanto, in qualsiasi Casa oroscopica si troverà Urano, i significati di quella Casa saranno caratterizzati da cambiamenti e instabilità.

Nello stesso modo, quando è di transito, la natura spirituale di Urano verrà enfatizzata e la casa oroscopica in cui esso transita indicherà il settore della nostra vita in cui è necessario operare qualche cambiamento per favorire la nostra crescita interiore. L'instabilità di Urano potrebbe richiederci improvvisamente di cambiare completamente corso alla nostra vita in modi che non penseremmo mai di poter fare. Qualunque sia il cambiamento che Urano ci impone, esso ci aiuterà a crescere spiritualmente, e se ci opporremo alla sua energia, probabilmente in futuro saremo costretti ad affrontare nuovamente quello stesso cambiamento od un altro ancora più faticoso. Ma se siamo consapevoli della sua forza, allora potremo fluire con la sua energia e beneficiare del cambiamento che ci sarà nelle nostre vite, a cui noi ci adatteremo, sapendo che sarà più congeniale al nostro nuovo Io interiore.

Quando è di transito, gli aspetti di congiunzione e opposizione con i nostri pianeti natali sono generalmente più forti di altri. Per esempio, se Urano di transito entra in contatto con il nostro Mercurio natale, il nostro modo di pensare verrà messo in discussione e, a seconda di dove è situato Mercurio nel nostro tema, ci ritroveremo a non essere più in linea con il nostro "vecchio modo di pensare" legato ad un settore di vita specifico, e il nostro modo di ragionare cambierà. Alla fine del transito, avremo una "mente nuova". Molto probabilmente il nostro atteggiamento verrà considerato "strano" dagli altri, ma naturalmente ciò dipenderà dalle nostre tendenze caratteriali e dall'ambiente in cui viviamo.

Essendo in relazione con il Segno dell'Acquario, Urano è anche il pianeta legato all'astrologia: la sua posizione nel tema natale rivelerà se la persona è portata per l'astrologia, ed i suoi transiti potrebbero mostrare quando la persona trarrà profitto dalla conoscenza di questa disciplina oppure quando comincerà ad interessarsene.

Nettuno

Nettuno è il pianeta della grande compassione e intuizione, è in relazione con il segno dei Pesci, la dodicesima Casa e perciò con il pianeta Giove. La spiritualità di Giove in questo Segno è più accentuata che nel Sagittario. Nel Sagittario Giove si identifica, fra gli altri, con la Religione, mentre nei Pesci esso assume una sfumatura più mistica. Pertanto, Nettuno nel nostro tema è il pianeta del sentimento d'Amore più elevato e del romanticismo, della filosofia e del misticismo, della fantasia, così come delle droghe e di tutti gli stati confusionali della mente. E, naturalmente, la Casa dove esso si colloca indicherà il campo di vita in cui questi significati saranno più enfatizzati.

Quando è in transito e male aspettato, Nettuno può ostacolare una chiara visione dei fatti, oppure può dare una predisposizione all'assunzione di droghe. Ma, se la sua energia viene compresa in modo positivo, essa potrebbe rendere più intuitiva la nostra mente, e pertanto manifesterà il suo carattere altamente spirituale.

Per esempio, Nettuno di transito sul Mercurio natale potrebbe accentuare la mente intuitiva se è aspettato in modo positivo, altrimenti potrebbe ostacolare una chiara visione dei significati della casa in cui è posto Mercurio.

La consapevolezza dei transiti di Nettuno assume perciò estrema importanza affinché noi possiamo comprendere profondamente gli avvenimenti con i quali ci confrontiamo ed agire di conseguenza.

Plutone

A seconda di come usiamo la sua forte energia, Plutone ha la capacità di innalzarci come di farci precipitare. E' stato messo in relazione al Segno dello Scorpione, e perciò l'Ottava Casa ed il pianeta Marte, le cui energie in questo segno sono più potenti, passionali, di quelle stesse che si trovano in Ariete. Pertanto, la casa in cui si trova Plutone nel nostro tema natale ci dirà in quale campo possiamo veramente "trasformarci", ricominciare una vita nuova, sotterrando il nostro passato.

Quando è di transito, Plutone ci chiede di "rinnovarci" totalmente, o meglio di "trasformare" qualche aspetto di noi stessi, con particolare riferimento al significato della Casa in cui transita. Da un punto di vista spirituale, questa "ristrutturazione" dovrà riguardare anche il nostro Io più intimo.

Come esempio, Plutone in transito su Mercurio natale chiederà all'individuo di porsi domande sul suo modo di pensare non solo limitandosi a cambiare alcuni punti di vista (come con Urano, ad esempio), ma rivoluzionando totalmente la struttura della sua mente. La persona si troverà a sperimentare un periodo di grande stress mentale che può anche essere pericoloso se non verrà compreso. Invece, la consapevolezza di questo transito la aiuterà a comprendere le forze in gioco e, accettando di seguire la corrente, sarà guidata verso una visione completamente nuova dell'energia mercuriana che abita in lei.

Quando dobbiamo confrontarci con l'energia di Plutone, non c'è via d'uscita: o decidiamo di guardarci veramente dentro, senza spaventarci dei "mostri" con cui ci potremmo scontrare, e trovare il modo di "trasformare" veramente ciò che è vecchio e inutile in qualcosa di nuovo e più adatto alla nostra vita, oppure la sofferenza che ne conseguirà sarà inevitabile.

 
Parlando di educazione dell'individuo, l'uso in astrologia dei tre pianeti lenti Urano, Nettuno e Plutone, risulta essere molto significativo, specie per ciò che riguarda la crescita spirituale, perché le energie di questi pianeti non influenzano solo la nostra mente, ma anche il nostro Io interiore.

The educational role of Astrology and the meanings of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

(Lecture delivered in September 2000 on the occasion of the 2nd Jyotish Conference organised in India, University of Punjab, by the International Federation of Astrology and Spiritual Sciences)

Introduction

As the late world renowned Indian Astrologer B.V. Raman has remarked in the 1970s following his travels to Europe and the United States, western astrology has actually developed into "psychological astrology". If in India, he wrote, these developments have not occured, it is not because of "any lapse on the part of ancient sages who propounded astrology". Dr. Raman had understood that the "attitude to life and the sense of values" of the Indian people are different from those held by Westerners. In fact, he wrote, in India the "belief in the theory of karma is still so strong" that nervous and psychological ills do not occur so easily as in the West, where there are "peculiar social and industrial conditions" ("Problems facing Western Astrologers", in "Hindu Astrology and the West", UBSPD 1996).

What Dr. Raman stated in the 1970s is still very true today. Therefore, in order to understand western astrology and its developments, even during the most recent years, we have to bear in mind the different needs that western astrologers have to face, which are mostly of a psychological nature.

It is in this framework that I believe the educational role of Astrology to be most important in the life of an individual. The teachings of Astrology are both of a material and a spiritual nature, encompassing not only the limited self understanding of the individual's life, but the wider, whole comprehensive understanding of the Higher Truth, the Cosmic Soul or Atman.

In this context, the use in western astrology of the three relatively newly discovered planets, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, has proved to be very meaningful when speaking of the education of the individual, especially as far as his spiritual achievements are concerned, because their energies not only affect our minds, but also our inner Self.

What is meant by "educational role"?

The word "education" is clear in denoting that Astrology has something to teach us. It is not only a science from which we can detect the good and the bad points in the person's character, or even the good and the bad events that are going to occur throughout his life. This science enables us to learn about our inner individual Self, as well as the Self of the entire Cosmos, the Spirit Creator of the Universe, which we are all part of. In fact, it is unconceivable for an astrologer not to feel bound to the entire Universe whenever practising: the chart then becomes a means to get in touch with another dimension, which we call "spiritual", to distinguish it from the material world we are all living in.

Therefore, Astrology holds an educational role in that it teaches us about both the material and the spiritual dimensions of life. But, we may ask, why should there be a discipline to remind us about these two aspects of life, if they are naturally within us and around us? The answer is that especially in the western world, the material side is evermore gaining ground, to the detriment of the spiritual. This unbalance would naturally lead to psychological instability if no remedy is taken. However, to fill this gap, a great thirst for spiritual meanings is nowadays found in the western world which calls for "educational" means that can make people re-discover the spirituality within them, without at the same time dragging their attention away from the material side of life and making their individual Self get in touch with the Higher Self. This purpose of Astrology I call "educational".

The awareness of the material and the spiritual as two aspects of life related the one to the other; of the individual Self and the Cosmic Self: he who deeply understands these dimensions, can truly be called a person of learning. In this sense, the "educational role of Astrology" also indicates the ability to instill not only knowledge, but also wisdom into the people.

The meanings of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

Being aware that Hindu Astrology does not take into account the extra-saturnine planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, and that only a few Indian astrologers have gone deep into the study of these planets, I would nevertheless like to report my own research experience, which I found meaningful when related to what mentioned above.

Generally speaking, while the position of the extra-saturnine planets in the natal chart would just show how the individual is going to use these energies, their transits will on the other hand have a potent impact on his character, giving him chances to totally change the direction of his life, nature, and even his inner feelings. These changes will prove positive if the individual understands them and flows with them; but they can also be totally incomprehensible and even destructive for those who are not aware of the forces at stake. However, in considering them one by one, I will try to make you deeply understand the meaningful power of their energies, especially when in transit. In fact, I here remember that a particular transit of these very slow planets will occur only once in a lifetime, and that we will not all experience the same transits - that is, for instance, only some people will experience transiting Pluto opposing their Sun.

Uranus

Uranus in a chart always bears the meaning of unpredictibility, changeability. It is the planet of the people of genius, as well as of those who have an eccentric nature. It has in fact been related to the sign of Aquarius, the eleventh house and therefore to planet Saturn, also ruling that sign. Saturn's severity when ruling the Aquarian sign is not the same as when ruling the Capricorn sign. The Saturn of the latter is more "material" than the one of the former, which is more concerned with the soul of the individual. Uranus is in fact severe in that it always gives way to its unpredictable character by keeping its "mainstay" intact and the nature of its changes is also radical. Moreover, these changes are concerned with the needs of the inner Self of the individual, and not with his material needs. Therefore, in whatever house Uranus is posited in our chart, the meanings of that house will be tinted with the quality of changeability and unpredictability.

In the same way, when in transit, Uranus' spiritual nature will be emphasized and the house that it transits will indicate the field of our life where a change is needed for our further inner growth. Uranus' unpredictability may even suddenly request us to completely change our lives in ways we would never think of. Whatever change Uranus will impose on us, it will help us grow spiritually, and should we oppose its energy, we may be forced to face that change or a harder one in the future. But if we are aware of its strength, we may then flow with its energy and benefit from the change in our lives, which we will adapt to, by knowing that it will be more suitable for our new inner Self.

When transiting our natal planets, the conjunction and the opposition aspects are generally found to be much stronger than any other aspect. To give an example, if transiting Uranus gets in touch with Mercury, we would be called to question our way of thinking and, depending on what house our Mercury is found in the chart, we will find that we are no more in line with our "old mind" regarding that specific field of life, our reasoning will change, and at the end of the transit, we will adopt a "new mind". Most probably our attitude will be considered "strange" by the other people, but that of course will depend on how rigid we usually are and what people we come in contact with, that is our inborn character and environment.

By being related to the sign of Acquarius, Uranus is also the planet linked with "astrology": its position in the birth chart may tell if the person is keen on astrology, and its transits may show the time when a person will profit from her astrological knowledge or will start being interested in this science.

Neptune

Neptune is the planet of great compassion and intuition, related to the sign of Pisces, the twelfth house and therefore planet Jupiter. Again here, as for Uranus, the meanings of the Piscean Jupiter have a higher spiritual nature than the Sagittarian Jupiter. In Sagittarius Jupiter identifies, among others, with Religion, whereas in Pisces it becomes more mystical. Therefore, Neptune in our chart is the planet of higher love and romance, of philosophy and mysticism, of phantasy, as well as of drugs and states of mental confusion. And, of course, the house where it is posited will indicate the field of life where these meanings may be highlighted.

When in transit and negatively aspected, Neptune may hinder a clear vision of facts, as it may give a disposition to drug addiction. But, if its energy is positively captured it may strengthen our intuitive mind, and it will then manifest its high spiritual nature.

Here again, as an example, Neptune transiting natal Mercury may accentuate the intuitive mind if it is positively aspected, otherwise it would hinder a clear vision of the meanings of the house where Mercury is posited.

The awareness of transiting Neptune is therefore of utmost importance, in order for us to deeply understand the events we may be confronted with and act accordingly.

Pluto

Pluto can make us either rise up to the very top or fall down right to the bottom, depending on how we use its very strong energy. It has been related to the sign of Scorpio, therefore the 8th house and planet Mars, whose energies in this house and sign are more powerful, passionate, than the same ones found in Aries and the first house. Therefore, the house where Pluto is posited in our natal chart will tell us the field of life where we can truly be "transformative", where we are able to start anew, by burying our past.

When in transit, Pluto requests us to totally "renew" ourselves, or better to "transform" some particular aspect of ourselves, depending on the meaning of the transiting house. From a spiritual point of view, this "renovation" will have to go deep into our inner Self.

As an example, Pluto transiting natal Mercury would call the individual to question his way of thinking not just by limiting himself to change some points of view (like with Uranus, for instance), but by totally reviewing the structure of his mind. The person will experience then a time of high mental stress which may even be dangerous for him, if not understood. But the awareness of this transit will help him understand what is going on and, by accepting to go with the tide, he will be guided toward a completely new vision of the mercurial energy within himself.

When we have to face Pluto’s energy, there is no way out: either we truly look into our Self without being scared of the "monsters" we may come across, and find the way to truly "transform" what is old and of no use into something new and more apt to our life, or we are bound to suffer.

Conclusion

In the western society, where people are considered more by their material rather than spiritual achievements, Astrology in its educational role may constitute a valuable means to avoid psychological ills.

Moreover, in all cultures the knowledge of Astrology may educate the people to know themselves and the world around them, making life be more acceptable from all points of view. This is why I have liked to call "Educational Astrology" my own system of astrology, which considers the above-mentioned educational role of primary importance in interpreting the chart. Its main scope is to free people's minds of confusion and fears by the simple knowledge of themselves, of their qualities as well as their faults, firmly believing in what Jiddu Krishnamurti used to preach, that is, by going deep into oneself "then there is the possibility to go infinitely farer. This is what really cares; if this is missing life has really little meaning, because nothing is left but a cycle of pleasure and pain, punishments and rewardings". ("Knowledge", in "Questions and Answers", it. transl.1983). And, speaking of education, please allow me to express here, in this prestigious University, the wish shared by many astrologers in the West, that in the near future Astrology be recognised as any other academic subject in all Universities.
