Si è parlato molto l’anno scorso di Khumbha Mela, la festa - o "giubileo" - hindu che ha luogo ogni dodici anni circa ad Allahabad, considerata una delle città più sacre dell'India perché situata alla confluenza del fiume Gange, fiume sacro per eccellenza, con il fiume Yamuna ed il mitico fiume Saraswati.

Nonostante le immagini televisive, così come i molti articoli apparsi su giornali e riviste, abbiano cercato di descrivere l'atmosfera di quella che indubbiamente è la festa religiosa più sentita, oltre che più numerosa - si calcola che sono state fra 30 e 70 milioni le persone che si sono recate in pellegrinaggio ad Allahabad fra il 9 gennaio e il 21 febbraio 2001 - è difficile riuscire a trasmettere la vera esperienza spirituale che si vive durante il periodo della "Mela". Tuttavia, credo sia importante conoscere i vari aspetti di diverse culture, specie in un'epoca in cui i mezzi di comunicazione ci permettono di valicare con estrema facilità i confini del nostro Paese. E' per questo motivo che vorrei anch'io tentare di ricordare lo spirito che animava la Kumbha Mela, con la mia personale testimonianza.

In questo luogo sacro non occorre essere hindu per sentirsi travolti dalla profonda religiosità che alberga nei cuori della gente. E' la sacralità dell'India intera che sembra qui concentrarsi, e che cattura gli animi di tutta la gente che vi si rifugia. E' l'Atman della filosofia indiana, la Grande Anima che tutto avvolge.

Il Prof. D.P. Dubey dell'Università di Allahabad, prendendo parte al Convegno di Astrologia organizzato all'interno della Kumbha Mela, spiegava nella sua relazione che il ciclo di dodici anni della Kumbha Mela viene scandito da "particolari congiunzioni astronomiche (yoga). Il concetto da capire qui - ha precisato il Prof. Dubey - è quello dell'intersezione di traiettorie di forze cosmiche, simbolizzate dal movimento dei pianeti e delle costellazioni, dallo scorrere di fiumi e di vite umane". Ecco, l'emozione più grande che ha caratterizzato la mia partecipazione alla Kumbha Mela è proprio stata quella di essermi sentita per la prima volta parte integrante del Cosmo, Una con il Tutto. Mi sembrava già di conoscere la gente intorno a me. Nella Kumbha Mela non vi è distinzione di sesso, rango o religione: è la pura rappresentazione dell'Equilibrio Cosmico, dove i pianeti, la natura, l'Uomo e Dio sono intimamente legati fra loro.

Mi trovavo ad Allahabad perché invitata dall'organizzatore del Convegno di Astrologia, il giornalista e astrologo indiano Ram Naresh Tripathi, a parlare di Astrologia e Religione. Non so ancora perché abbia accettato di prendere parte al convegno: anche se fin da giovanissima sono stata attratta dalle filosofie orientali, la mia cultura è completamente diversa e mi sentivo intimorita dalla possibilità che la mia relazione non fosse per questo ben interpretata. Ma una volta ad Allahabad, ho compreso che non era importante la ragione per la quale mi ero recata così lontano. Ciò che contava veramente era il fatto che mi trovassi lì, a condividere con altre migliaia di persone un'esperienza unica, densa di significati che vanno al di là di qualsiasi logica. Ho capito che ero stata “portata“ in quel luogo non solo dalle circostanze, ma da una forza invisibile, a me del tutto nuova, forse perché comprendessi il concetto "dell'intersezione di traiettorie di forze cosmiche", di cui parlava il Prof. Dubey nella sua conferenza.

Remembering the Kumbh Mela (between spirituality and astrological tradition)

Last year the media have extensively reported about the Kumbh Mela, the festival -or "Jubilee" - of the hindus, which takes place every twelve years in Allahabad, one among the most sacred towns of India, because it is located on the confluence of the Ganges river - the most sacred river par excellence - with the Yamuna river and the mythical Saraswati river.

The TV images, as well as the many articles that appeared on newspapers and magazines, have tried to describe the atmosphere of what surely is the religious festival most felt by the Indian people, and the largest - pilgrims who went to Allahabad between 9th January - 21st February 2001 are estimated to have been about 30 to 70 million! -. But it is difficult to be able to communicate the real spiritual experience that is found in the "Mela" period. In spite of all, I believe it is important to have a general knowledge of the various aspects of different cultures, especially in an era in which means of communication allow us to easily go beyond the borders of our own Country. This is the reason why I will try here to report about my personal experience of the Kumbha Mela so that, through my humble contribution, the spirit of it be known.

In this sacred place you do not need to be a hindu in order to feel overwhelmed by the deep religiosity that lies in the people's hearts. All those who come to this place are captured by India's holyness. You can in a way experience the "Atman", the all enfolding Soul.

Prof. D.P. Dubey of Allahabad University, who was taking part in the Astrology Conference organized within the Kumbh Mela, in his lecture was explaining that the cycle of twelve years of the Kumbha Mela is following "special astronomic conjunctions (yoga). The concept to be here understood - Prof. Dubey was pointing out - is the one of the intersection of trajectories of cosmic forces, symbolized by the movement of planets and constellations, by the running of rivers and human lives". Yes, the greatest emotion I felt when I took part in the Kumbha Mela was the one of feeling - for the first time in my life - One with the Cosmos, with the Whole. I felt I had already known the people around me. In the Kumbha Mela you don't feel the difference in sex, caste or religion: it is like the creation of the Cosmic Balance, where the planets, nature, Man and God are closely bound together.

I was in Allahabad because the organizer of the Astrology Conference, the Indian reporter and astrologer Ram Naresh Tripathi, invited me to speak about Astrology and Religion. I still don't know why I have accepted to take part to that conference: although since very young I got interested in Oriental philosophies, my culture is completely different and I was afraid that my lecture would not be understood. Only the fact that I was there was truly important, that I could share with thousands of other people a unique experience, full of meanings that go beyond any reasoning. I understood that I was "brought" to that place not only by circumstances, but also by an invisible force, completely new to me, perhaps in order to understand the concept "of the intersection of trajectories of cosmic forces", mentioned by Prof. Dubey in his lecture.
